Schaffhausen is a beautiful historic town near the German border, just 40 minutes from Zurich by car.

We visited this charming city in December, just in time for the Christmas market. We parked our car at Diana Parkhaus, which is close to the city center with only 2 CHF / hour.

The city is so beautifully decorated in the spirit of Christmas, you could sense the smell of mulled wine everywhere and we even saw a lovely artistic dance on the ice rink.

The Old Town

We really enjoyed walking around the Medieval Old Town passing by the Baroque buildings and beautifully decorated facades. This stunning building below is Haus zum Ritter (House of the Knight).

Explore the car-free Old Town, admire the decorative windows, painted facades, clock towers and stop by for something to eat at one of the Christmas markets.

Gothic church of St. Johann

The Gothic church of St. Johann is another place that is not to be missed, especially in this time of year, when it looks so amazing under Christmas lights.

Munot Fortress

One of the top attractions in Schaffhausen is the impressive Munot Fortress. High above the city, the 16th-century ring-shaped fortress is the best place to admire the surrounding landscape. The Fortress is surrounded by a vineyard, so I can imagine how fragrant it can become in the fall. From up here you get splendid views of the River Rhine and Schaffhausen’s Old Town. We definitely need to visit the city again in summertime.
