Thun is a beautiful city situated on the lake with the same name. We were actually very impressed by this town. I’ve seen pictures on internet before, but we discovered so much more when we arrived. We visited Thun in mid October, but still got beautiful warm weather, around 18°C – 20°C.
Thun Castle
Among the most important places to visit in the city is Thun Castle, which stands on a hill above the town with amazing views over the Alps.
Schadau Park
We had a nice little walk from the city centre to Schadau Park. Schloss Schadau Hotel is not to be missed on the lake’s shore.
Schloss Schadau is a beautiful majestic building from 1852. In 2019, the castle was completely renovated, and now most rooms enjoy wonderful lake views.
The grass was still so green and the beautiful colored roses made the scenery so picturesque! Really a beautiful place to relax. Take your time and enjoy the landscape.
The wooden-covered bridge
On the Aare river there is a beautiful wooden-covered bridge which looks like the one from Lucerne. Built in 1724 and re-constructed in 1788, the bridge also serves as a river lock. From here comes also the name of Obere Schleuse. Cross it and go over to the historic city center.
When we walk over the bridge in October it was literally full of giant spiders. I couldn’t even cross the bridge!
I remember taking photos, and they were so huge, I think my phone almost entered in portrait mode on one’s face 😂 That was crazy!
Thun really is an amazing town to visit. About 3 – 4 hours should be enough. In the city center area there are plenty of restaurants with cute little terraces by the river Aare. Don’t forget to visit Thun Castle. Climbing to the castle is really a joy.
Don’t be fooled by the number of stairs, actually they are really easy to climb.
St. Beatus Caves
If you are in the area, don’t miss out St. Beatus Caves, about 20 minutes drive from Thun. The road is simply stunning, for sure you will stop several times to take photos and admire the views. There are two parking spots at St. Beatus Caves so that should be enough.
This is a fun and informative way of spending time for kids and adults altogether. Remember that inside the caves it’s a bit chilly, around 8 – 10°C, so come prepared. Adults fee: CHF 18.
Even if you are not planning on visiting the caves, you can simply climb the beautiful path to the restaurant on top, overlooking lake Thun.
Other activities that can be done nearby:
- visit Spiez
- Interlaken
- visit Oberhofen Castle
- Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald are in the area also.
On the other side of Interlaken there is Lake Brienz, one of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland.
Check my recent posts and photos on Lake Brienz:
Have an amazing day!
